Young people preparing to head to university next month should prepared themselves for a shopping bill that could potentially be more than they were expecting, it has been suggested.
In news that may be of interest to those seeking unsecured loans, research by Abbey Banking has found that the average cost of a student's grocery purchases has increased by £127.40 from last year's figures.
The most popular items among under-graduates were found to be bread, cereals and dairy products, rather than the traditional alcohol, it was also noted.
However, the first two items have now risen in cost by 13.7 per cent and the latter by 19 per cent.
Steve Shore, director of the department, said: "Inflation is eating into student spending power at an incredible rate and for those heading off to university this year the increased cost of basic goods is likely to come as a nasty surprise."
In related news that may be of interest to people looking for unsecured loans, Friends of the Earth has advised that implementing green alternatives, such as regularly cycling or walking, could help to reduce carbon emissions and household outgoings.
